Many of my clients are military families just like my family! I polled military families for their top tips for being posted to major military bases across Canada.
Top 5 Tips for Posting to Petawawa
- The area is beautiful and filled with plenty of activities for the out door enthusiast. Get a CAC card from the local Rec Centre and use it to rent paddle boards and kayaks for free at the Marina. Use it for discounts on programs through PSP. Also check out activities in the neighbouring towns. Ottawa is a great trip for the weekend!
- A vehicle is a necessity due to lack of local bus system. FYI - Taxis do run between towns.
- The MFRC offers a variety of excellent family programming. Register for Careconnect as soon as you arrive - it will connect you with essential services such as a potential family doctor. For spouses, the job market can be limited, start your employment search prior to arriving.
- Pembroke tends to have higher property taxes than Petawawa, but may have lower hydro rates. It may even out your budget in the end.
- The weather is cold and there's lots of salt. Snow blowers are essential. Consider annual winter maintenance to extend the life of your vehicle.
